El Akiki is the chief of hospitalist service at Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital-Needham. She received her medical degree from Lebanese University, School of Medical Sciences and completed her residency at Staten Island University Hospital. Originally from Lebanon, Dr. El Akiki says that she emigrated to the U.S. because, here, opportunity should exist for all, regardless of the color of their skin, their gender or their religious beliefs. Serving as the hospital’s representative on the Beth Israel Lahey Health Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Taskforce, she spoke eloquently at a Black Lives Matter protest about racism as a public health issue. El Akiki worked as a physician lead at the beginning of the hospital’s pandemic response to add additional ICU beds and ventilators. She rose above and beyond to care for patients during the pandemic, and at the same time, facilitated a White Coats for Black Lives event at the hospital to show her solidarity and support.
