GILDA BARABINO, PH.D.

President, Franklin W. Olin College of Engineering

Before becoming Olin College of Engineeringā€™s second president, Barabino held academic and administrative appointments at the City College of New York, Georgia Institute of Technology, Emory University, and Northeastern University. A chemical engineer by training, with broad interests in global health and interdisciplinary research and education, Barabino has pioneered new engineering approaches to solve problems in medicine.

 

She is an internationally recognized thought leader and highly sought-after speaker and consultant on race and gender in STEM, with a particular focus on creating cultures and climates that support a sense of belonging. Barabinoā€™s accolades include the American Institute of Chemical Engineersā€™ Award for Service to Society (2019) and the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics, and Engineering Mentoring (2018) and membership in the American Academy of Arts and Sciences National Academy of Engineering and the National Academy of Medicine. Barabino received a B.S. from Xavier University of Louisiana and a Ph.D. from Rice University.
